Background
Often project data held within our client’s technical applications proved difficult to find at a later date. They recognised a business need to efficiently access data at the desktop, integrating current and historic geotechnical data sources and allowing an effective view of archived and on-line data.
The solution implemented integrated GeoQuest, DMS and other applications beneath a web-interface, enabling users to find and access corporate data from their desktop. The implementation involved:
- A review of the geotechnical data requirements of the business
- A review of data management practices and procedures
- Integration of the databases and applications including
- Identification of current and historic data storage locations
- Collation and consolidation of a definitive source of data, stored in data repositories, appropriate to the data type
- Installation and 'federation' of data across databases, ensuring different data types are linked and can be viewed via a single point of access
- Definition of work-flows required to maintain the definitive source of data, to ensure that data integrity is maintained, secure and is always of known quality
- Development of data transfer mechanisms between sources of data, to ease data flow
Outcome
- Elimination of 'data islands'
- An efficient and flexible data access process, allowing improved productivity in both existing projects and new project start-ups
- Data accessible from the desktop, pulled from integrated data repositories via easy-to-use mechanisms
- Quality controlled data, loaded and maintained to client standards
- User community that understands the process and tools available to them
- Increased value of the data asset by knowing what is available and where it is stored, helping the business respond to constantly shifting business demands and recognise business opportunities effectively
- Reduced IT spend by maximising utilisation of existing software, techniques and previous investments in user training
